A Word from the Director, Jean Marie Schultz
Welcome to the 2009 University of California, Santa Barbara Summer Institute of French and Francophone Studies. The Institute, which is now in its 33rd year, offers an intensive, three-summer, full-immersion program leading to a Masters Degree in French. It is the only intensive, full immersion program in the western United States. The curriculum prepares students in four distinct areas of French and Francophone scholarship — language, linguistics, culture, and literature — and as such insures that graduates possess a well-rounded knowledge of French and Francophone studies. The Institute is designed particularly for teachers and other professionals who cannot pursue their studies during the regular academic year, as well for graduate students enrolled in other regular programs who need a summer of intensive study to dramatically improve their French. UC Santa Barbara makes a special effort each year to attract an outstanding faculty to the program and to offer an MA consisting of a high quality graduate curriculum. Although the elective courses revolve on a three-year cycle focusing on the fine arts, music, media, and advanced linguistics, this year we are proud to offer courses in Francophone literature and cinema and in evolution of the French language.
The Institute is fortunate not only to have an outstanding faculty but also an enthusiastic and dedicated group of students. Please click on the "What Students Have to Say" section of this website to meet some of our recent students.
You will find detailed information about the Institute and application procedures at this site. If you have questions that remain unanswered, please contact us by phone or e-mail. If you are interested in studying at the 2009 Summer Institute, I urge you to begin the application process early. The process of obtaining transcripts, letters of recommendation, and GRE scores often takes longer than candidates expect.
I look forward to working with you in Santa Barbara at the 2009 Summer Institute.
