About the Institute
The Summer Institute in Hispanic Languages and Culture at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is the only summer immersion Master's program for Hispanic Languages and Literatures in the western United States.
Our students include seasoned high school teachers, recent graduates headed for PhD programs, and adults interested in learning more about the Hispanic world. In three, six-week long summer sessions, students earn a Master's degree. They also improve their knowledge of Hispanic languages and culture, without ever having to leave the country.
While living on the beautiful campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara, students study with dynamic professors from Spain, Latin America, and North America. The program offers a rigorous overview of the language, history, literature, and cultures of Spain and Spanish America. A joint venture between the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Summer Sessions program, our program offers students a chance to fully dedicate themselves to their graduate studies while benefiting from the language immersion environment in which cultural and academic activities form part of daily life.
