Application and Admission
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The Hispanic Institute accepts applications from prospective students who received their B.A. from an accredited college with an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 in the Junior./Senior years and they are fluent in the language of study. It is recommended that the B.A. major be in the target language of study, but is not required if the student has a good number of classes in the language. The admission policy is based on intellectual potential and promise, academic records and programmatic fit. The admissions committee looks for native speaking fluency or any other relevant qualifications such as foreign diploma equivalency, professional certifications in the target discipline, or recognized post-graduate work in the domain with a minimum GPA of 3.3.
Applicants usually ask about the language proficiency since all students must speak the language of study at all times while at the Institute. It is suggested that students applying to the Institute use these minimum proficiency levels: to speak the language of study at the intermediate-high level, listen at the high level, and read at the advanced level.

RECORDING IN SPANISH
For purposes of placement, first-year applicants are required to submit a 5 minute recorded/taped extemporaneous presentation in Spanish and a typed one-thousand-word (maximum) personal essay in Spanish on any well organized topic of their choice. At the beginning of the Institute, students may be required to do another briefer essay on an assigned topic.

International Students
Non-permanent resident international students should note the following information:
International students admitted to the Summer Language Institutes will receive a Form I-20, Certificate of Eligibility for Non-Immigrant (F-1) Student Status, to attend the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). International students must complete visa documents with the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) before arriving at the Institute. If you will need a visa for the summer program, please contact the OISS regarding your visa needs or notify the Summer Language Institutes Program Manager. She will be happy to communicate with the OISS on your behalf.
Health Insurance
Graduate insurance coverage (GSHIP) during Summer Sessions is available to graduate students enrolled in the Graduate Summer Language Institutes. Beginning in May, students may voluntarily enroll in GSHIP for summer by submitting an enrollment form with payment. This form may be obtained from the Student Health website.
Recreational Center (Rec Cen) Access
As a UCSB graduate student you have access to all UCSB student services and facilities. However, access to the Rec Cen is dependent on your BARC fee status. If you plan to use the Rec Cen as soon as you arrive at UCSB, be sure to pay your BARC balance prior to your arrival. For payment by mail, give yourself at least one week.
