Curriculum
The M.A. requires completion of 40 units of course work, of which 36 are required courses. Beginning in 2005, all entering students will take the comprehensive M.A. exam at the end of the third summer. (Click here to download the comprehensive exam reading list..) In the second summer, students will turn in a 15-20 page Master's essay based on their coursework in the first summer (click here for details on the M.A. Essay and click here for Notes on How to Write a M.A. Paper). Students will select a topic from one of the following first-year courses: Cultural History of Spain (207ss), Cultural History of Spanish America (208ss), or Linguistic Analysis (200ss). A minimum grade of "B" is required in each course.

Transfer Credits
Up to eight quarter-units (or six semester-units) of appropriate work in an accredited graduate program may be accepted after completion of one summer at the Institute. Approved transfer of these units allows students to undertake a lighter course load during their residency. Transfer courses must have a "B" or better grade.
